Zombieland – Review

Posted by admin on Monday, December 7th, 2009

You know those movies with post apocalyptic settings in which the main character has a special mission of great importance, where he needs to go somewhere or do something that can change the course of history and that can even mean salvation for the entire human race? If you do, forget about them when going to see Zombieland, because this one is nothing like that. It’s a simple movie, with a simple plot, a simple story and a natural ending to all that, and I love it for it. I love and respect it for its honesty and simplicity and I think that this combo offers more than most pretentious movies do. I’m more impressed with a film that accomplishes everything it has set out to do, than with one that aims high and fails memorably at reaching its goals.

So I said it has a simple plot, but I don’t think that perfectly describes it. So let me rephrase it: one needs an IQ of 10 to fully grasp it’s meaning, and one can do that while being completely absorbed by another activity, which for such a dumb individual can mean anything. The world is overrun by zombies. They appeared because of a virus that patient zero got from a hamburger. As far as we know there are only four people on the face of the planet that haven’t turned into zombies yet and they share a common interest: surviving. But they do have some secondary objectives. Tallahassee for example, played by Woody Harrelson, would like a Twinkie and the two female characters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) are interested in going to an amusement park. As you can see there are no detours from their ultimate goal which is having fun at all costs. Actually the whole movie circles around the idea that if it’s without a shadow of a doubt the end of the world, you might as well enjoy every moment of it. After all, you don’t get to witness the doom of humanity every day, so why not make the best out of it?

It’s pointless to talk about acting more than to say that you will have no major complains at the end of the film. And that’s not because the actors lack the skill or the talent – at least in the case of Mr. Harrelson I believe there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that he can deliver extraordinary performances – but simply because the roles do not allow much: you can’t come out as majorly impressive when your only task is to act funny while killing mindless zombies. The special effects are decent, the settings are good and the story will make you smile if not laugh every once in a while. So there you have it, that’s Zombieland in a nutshell and even I wish I couldn’t have placed it in a roomier recipient. But unlike many other comedies out there, it’s a breath of fresh air that will make 120 minutes fly by. This movie comes to show once more how much you can do with a handful of actors and a good idea. Have fun!
