Rift Exploit Patched By Hacker

Posted by Seth Lex on

Trion Worlds, the developer of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Rift, received an unexpected helping hand in addressing a serious Rift account security issue: the help came from a hacker who is also a Rift player. After being himself the victim of account theft, ManWitDaPlan took matters in his own hands and began investigating the source of the problem, reporting his findings on the game’s official forum. According to ManWitDaPlan as stated in an interview with fan-site ZAM Rift, Trion Worlds response to the issue was “spot-on”.

“Steve Chamberlin, the dev lead for Rift, was on the phone with me within five minutes of my sending the technicals on the exploit,” said ManWitDaPlan … More

Guild Wars 2: Thief Profession – Screenshots And Skills Videos

Posted by Seth Lex on

Guild Wars 2 Thief profession was first in the spotlight one week ago. The master of stealth and surprise was the sixth archetype character of the Guild Wars 2 universe to be revealed to the public and promises to be a challenging, yet rewarding character to play with. As expected, it relies heavily on the element of surprise and it’s quick on its feet and extraordinarily evasive in order to compensate for its relatively low health points and light armor. If placed in the right hands, with skills which allows it to vanish into thin air, travel through shadows, or steal items from its opponents which then can be used as weapons, the thief will be a difficult enemy to face in PVP and a welcomed allied in group play. … More

Rift Preview

Posted by Seth Lex on

With seven open beta sessions under its belt, Rift: Planes of Telara is probably one of the most polished fantasy MMORPGs at launch. The graphics range from pleasing to breathtaking depending on one’s tastes, bugs are nonexistent or if some managed to survive they are certainly not show-stopping or heavily frustrating gameplay wise and all the game’s elements come together to create a fluid gameplay experience. But is that sufficient to keep a subscription based MMO afloat on a market in which free-to-play is the new rage? We took a look for you at what Rift hides under its shiny polished cloak so you can decide for yourself. … More

Battlestar Galactica Online Preview

Posted by Seth Lex on

Battlestar Galactica Online, a browser based Free-to-Play Sci-Fi MMORPG developed by Bigpoint, has just recently surfaced to the level of public awareness with the game going from closed beta to its open beta stage. With the Unity engine at its core, this space combat simulator sets new standards for browser games, as it looks, sounds and behaves countless times better than any other video game released for this media.

At the start of the game any new player will have to choose from the two available and rival factions: the Cylons and the Humans. There isn’t much information to help with this decision and you might wonder what the two factions stand for and what your role might be if you pick one or the other, especially if the BGO lore is not something you are up to date with. The truth is that … More

Frogster Is Not Backing Down On Refusing Negotiation With Hacker

Posted by Seth Lex on

Frogster, the developer of highly popular F2P (free to play) MMORPG Runes of Magic (RoM), was recently the target of a hacker attack that allegedly compromised thousands of accounts for its flagship product. Following this attack, the hacker, publicly known under the nickname Augustus87, released his demands which mostly focused on improving customer support and forum control for RoM, threatening that if they are met numerous account details will be made public. To back up his claims Augustus87 already released the details of 2000 users.  Frogster’s immediate response suggested that the data released was from 2007, before the release of Runes of Magic. However access, forum privileges and account settings for the 2000 compromised accounts, have been revoked to “protect the affected players.” … More

SWTOR Is Not A Good Investment

Posted by Seth Lex on

As recently reported by Gamasutra, Mike Hickey of Janco Partners stated that “We believe many investors are betting against SWTOR achieving market success, provided the company’s, and industry’s track record at releasing successful new MMOs”. In his opinion many factors come to support his claims, ranging from EA’s track record for successful MMO launches to the pending $400 million lawsuit with Activision. … More

Zombie MMO for Consoles

Posted by Seth Lex on

Whether they terrorize us and make us shiver under the blankets or they just make us laugh hysterically until we cry, zombies will always remain a great source of entertainment. Apparently video games industry veteran Jeff Strain feels the same way, as he has recently announced the formation of Undead Labs, a game development studio based in Seattle that will focus on online games. But not any kind of online games, but the definitive massively multiplayer online zombie game (MMOZ). So double undead trouble!

Strain left NCSoft last summer (we hear a roar of applauses in the background) with the declared goal of building from the ground up, together with a few of the most talented developers, a creative studio that targets a new breed of MMO for console gamers. … More
