Remember Me Review
Posted by Seth Lex onWhatever you do in life will be insignificant…
Remember Me is the story of Tyler Hawkings (Robert Pattinson), a young man struggling to find meaning in his life after his family has been torn apart by the tragedy of his brother’s suicide. He chooses to lead a bohemian existence and refuses any kind of support coming from his wealthy father (Pierce Brosnan), who carries in Tyler’s opinion most of the blame for his brother’s death. His life suddenly changes when he meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin), a girl who resonates with his feelings and peculiar behavior. Unplanned and unexpected, the relationship between them flourishes as they fall in love with each other, and offers Tyler the very thing that he was missing and desperately searching for. Remember Me is all about a rainbow of human emotions. It’s about having bonds so strong that death can not break and some so weak that blood turns into water. It’s about the comfort and understanding a stranger can provide and your family can’t. It’s about the genius of a twelve year old sister that can be more mature than both her parents put together. And it’s about… many many other surprisingly beautiful things that you will discover once you decide to go see this movie.
Vampirophobic as I am and resenting by default anything even remotely connected to Harry Potter, seeing Robert Pattinson on the movie poster was a major turnoff. I immediately considered and accepted the possibility that casting him was probably a marketing decision meant to draw the moths to the bright light of the theaters (cha-ching!). Yet, unlike many other of its kind, it was a decision that did not jeopardize the artistic potential of the project, on the contrary: now, after having the privilege of seeing Mr. Pattinson filling the shoes of Tyler Hawkings, I can think of no better actor for the part. He delivered a truly mesmerizing performance complemented by those of the powerful actors that filled the ranks of the supporting cast.
Rarely was I blessed with such a perfect mix of acting and directing as in the case of Remember Me. The camera moves like a wand in the hands of a very talented magician (Allen Coulter), revealing with its subtle movements a world of paralyzing beauty and simplicity. A world much like our own, but one in which meaning drips from every color, in which every shape has its own story to tell and every detail is as important as the big picture. Not once did I feel that if I reach out I could touch the very fabric of this world in which light and shadow swirl together to create the most astonishing effects. Bravo Mr. Director!
And the last round of applause go to Will Fetters who managed to write a script that can only be compared to a rare and very precious jewel that sparkles with brilliant dialogs belonging to characters barely sketched, yet appearing to be so powerful, so… real. He wrote a simple story, but one that anyone can relate to in one way or another, thus giving it a universal value.
Remember Me will hurt you and heal you in the same time, branding you in the process with soul-scars of unimaginable depth. It’s a mind staggering experience, an emotional rollercoaster, a life lesson. Unfortunately it’s a movie that many will never fully understand, thus leaving them forever ignorant of its beauty.
