Remember Me Review

Posted by Seth Lex on

Whatever you do in life will be insignificant…

Remember Me is the story of Tyler Hawkings (Robert Pattinson), a young man struggling to find meaning in his life after his family has been torn apart by the tragedy of his brother’s suicide. He chooses to lead a bohemian existence and refuses any kind of support coming from his wealthy father (Pierce Brosnan), who carries in Tyler’s opinion most of the blame for his brother’s death. His life suddenly changes when he meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin), a girl who resonates with his feelings and peculiar behavior. Unplanned and unexpected, the relationship between them flourishes as they fall in love with each other, and offers Tyler the very thing that he was missing and desperately searching for. Remember Me is all about a rainbow of human emotions. It’s about having bonds so … More

The Blind Side Review

Posted by Seth Lex on

Ever since I saw Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday I thought I will never ever see a better movie about football and the truth is I still haven’t, the champion is still unchallenged. I am mentioning this because I did expect The Blind Side to be another hundred minutes of tackles, both on and outside the pitch, another movie that glorifies what is in fact just a mutant form of rugby, another mix of pain, sweat and tears. To my surprise The Blind Side is nowhere near that definition. The mix is there, but this time it’s about a much violent sport: life.

Black Snake Moan Review

Posted by Seth Lex on

Somehow every year from the whole set of international releases there are a few movies we miss out on. You can blame it on bad marketing, wrong targeting or just some freak happening, but either way the result can be the same: a movie goes under the radar and it stays there until someone is kind enough to dig it out and recommend it to us. If this were to happen only to titles such as Sex and the City I honestly wouldn’t mind that much. On the contrary I would actually be glad and even grateful for being spared of the horror of watching such Hollywood productions. But unfortunately it tends to happen to more interesting ones also. For me this was the case of Black Snake Moan, a movie released in March 2007 that I never heard of until recently and that has managed to turn me in the course of two hours into one of its biggest fans. … More

Avatar Review

Posted by Seth Lex on

1.3 billion dollars. That’s the result of the latest sale report for James Cameron’s Avatar. Although many debate that the sales have been boosted by the IMAX ticket pricing, the movie’s popularity makes it without a doubt one of the shiny successes of 2009 and the town’s talk for 2010. Yet there are plenty of naysayers out there calling it common, boring, a run of the mill. Compared to the Avatar fan boys/girls their number is insignificant, but their voice must be heard and it is as important as anybody else’s. So I decided that a review based on their opinions would be at least a good idea.

Their first complaint is about the story, which in a highly condensed version goes like this: on a distant planet called Pandora humans … More

Law Abiding Citizen Review

Posted by Seth Lex on

The idea of a man taking the wheel of justice in his own hands and dedicating his entire life to the pursuit of revenge is not at all new in the realm of cinematography. For example, Payback from ’99 with Mel Gibson already walked down that road and did it nicely, but Law Abiding Citizen has managed to polish this idea and bring it as close to perfection as a movie could ever do.

Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) loses his wife and daughter during a home invasion. Soon after, the two criminals are captured and brought to face justice, but in order to maintain a high conviction rate, the prosecutor Nick Rice (Jamie Fox) cuts a deal with one of them in exchange for his testimony against the other. As a result one of the murderers gets a highly reduced sentence while the other is facing death row and ten years pass before that conviction … More

Zombieland – Review

Posted by Seth Lex on

You know those movies with post apocalyptic settings in which the main character has a special mission of great importance, where he needs to go somewhere or do something that can change the course of history and that can even mean salvation for the entire human race? If you do, forget about them when going to see Zombieland, because this one is nothing like that. It’s a simple movie, with a simple plot, a simple story and a natural ending to all that, and I love it for it. I love and respect it for its honesty and simplicity and I think that this combo offers more than most pretentious movies do. I’m more impressed with a film that accomplishes everything it has set out to do, than with one that aims high and fails memorably at reaching its goals. … More

500 Days of Summer – Review

Posted by Seth Lex on

The movie comfortably rests midway between a drama with a few funny moments and a romantic comedy with a serious dose of realism. Tipping the scales towards one side or the either is just a matter of viewer taste and mood at the time of the viewing, but no matter the perspective the film’s presence in one’s long term memory is short lived.

The plot is rather simple: Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) meets Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel); boy falls in love; girl is looking just for fun and does not fall in love; boy is in pain; viewer is trying really hard to care. The stream of events follows this general pattern throughout the entire movie and there are no surprises in stored for you, no special events, no change of pacing, no nothing. … More

9 – Review

Posted by Seth Lex on

9 is an eighty minutes long CGI film produced by Tim Burton, which presents the story of a group of tiny human-made rag dolls that fight for survival on a post apocalyptic world that was once much similar to our own. Reminiscences of the machines that brought the complete extinction of the human race still roam free in this world and pose a deadly threat to any living thing, including the nine little dolls which are brought to life by the voices of great actors such as Christopher Plummer, Martin Landau, Jennifer Connelly and Elijah Wood.

The post apocalyptic setting is slowly but surely becoming one of the most boring and over used ones out there. 9 makes no exception from this, and quickly embraces stereotypical elements like the streets filled with wrecked cars, the empty grey buildings, the rust, the dust and the acid rain. … More

Moon – Review

Posted by Seth Lex on

Brilliant, just brilliant! I followed a friend’s advice and saw this movie and now I can’t help feeling that I owe him a lot. Because if I was to follow the commercials, the movie reviews from other magazines and in general the trend, the scent of popularity, then Moon would have been that fish small enough to fit through the holes of the net. What a huge loss that would have been…

Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is an astronaut working for the Lunar Corporation. Supported by a robot named GERTY (voice: Kevin Spacey) he is the one-man-crew of a facility that tends to four automated machines that mine for Helium 3 on the far side of the moon. Only two weeks separate him from the end of his three years contract and from returning back to Earth to rejoin his wife and little daughter. But something goes wrong, terribly wrong. … More

Pandorum – Review

Posted by Seth Lex on

Pandorum falls in the large gap of mediocrity most movies nowadays do, leaving you with mixed feelings and with the impression that you haven’t completely wasted your time watching it, but you can’t put your finger on any of its features and call them brilliant. It’s common and easily forgotten.

The plot is simple, as the rest of the movie: in the future, the human race, facing extinction, sends into space towards a recently discovered planet that resembles Earth, a large colonization space ship. Due to malfunctions to the cryogenic sleep systems, a large part of the human cargo suffers mutations and turns into a cannibalistic life form with superhuman strength and enhanced predator abilities. A small group of survivors fights to save both ship and its decimated cargo, but to make matters worse some of them suffer from Pandorum, … More
